12 Mile Creek

Trees are starting to display fall colours on some of the favourite running trails in St. Catharines.

Brought my camera with me on a hike along the 12 Mile Creek Thursday to shoot some photos of fall colours. I wish I would have brought my running shoes instead because it was such a beautiful afternoon. But I had already finished my run for the day with a hard 19k workout in the morning and I wanted to try a few ideas I had with the camera. Haven’t had a chance to do much personal work lately so I headed to the trail after bringing the girls back to school after lunch.

There are many trails along the 12 Mile Creek.

There are a lot of amazing trails in Niagara. To be honest I don’t do a lot of trail running, instead opting for hiking on the trails with my wife and daughters. But it is something I’d like to get more into. I understand there is a long-time half marathon race hosted by the St. Catharines Runners and Walkers as well as a series of trail races that take place along 12 Mile Creek. There is also Hydro Hill, which I’ve heard all sorts terrible things about.

Didn’t see a whole lot of people running along 12 Mile Creek on Thursday but I did find some company.

Found this guy hanging up for dear life as the wind picked up.
Love to see wildlife on the trails. Can you find who is hiding in the shade?

  1. Wow! What a beautiful landscape to run in, you are truly lucky to have such great places to run and still have great sights to see to help keep you motivated to keep going. I love the snail shot and the one by the water.

  2. Hi. I’ve been wondering about how to get onto the 12-mile Creek Trail from the Short Hills side, and I haven’t been able to find any information about that. Do you have any tips?
    Thanks,
    Kevin.

    1. Hi Kevin, I haven’t run on that part of the trail much so I don’t know for sure, but I think you can access the 12 Mile Creek Trail from First Street Louth near Pelham Road. Check out the Niagara Greenbelt website (http://www.niagaragreenbelt.com/site-map/725-12-mile-creek-mountain-bike-loop.html) for more information about 12 Mile Creek and other running and mountain biking trails in Niagara.

Let me know if you find it. I usually pick up the trail downtown or off Glendale Avenue. I either run to Martindale Road or up to Hydro Hill and Brock and then back.
