Here’s an update on some local races

Registration is now open for the Subaru Niagara Running Series.

Race Kit Event Services, which organizes the local series, made the announcement on its new website for the series Jan. 9. The first race in the series, the 19th annual Grimsby Half Marathon and 3k, is scheduled for Feb. 24. Click here to register now.

In an e-newsletter released Jan. 10, organizers highlighted some changes to the series this year, including a new race: the Halloween 7k and 1k in Stoney Creek Oct. 27. More details will come, like a course map, but the new race will be presented by Profetto Family Medicine.

The Fast and the Furriest 5k and 1k dog jog and walk has also been added to the Confederation Park 5k and 1k race May 11. In addition to the usual race, the day will also include an off-leash area for pooches and souvenir dog tags for K9 finishers.

Race fees range from $35 for 5k to $60 for halfs. There are registration deadline, though, where fees are bumped up. Check out the website for more details.

The Chocolate Race is back in 2013 for its fifth running in St. Catharines May 12.

The day features 5k, 10k and 10 mile races as well as 1k and a 2.5k trail race for youngsters.Organizers Dirty Runners Productions promise the race features chocolate-covered strawberries, chocolate ice cream and other chocolate treats on course. Make it to the finish to refuel with chocolate milk. Post-race? You guessed it, more chocolate.
