Race organizers have also announced Kathrine Switzer will part of the half marathon weekend, meeting runners during Race Packet Pick Up May 31 and June 1 and at half June 2. Switzer was a pioneer for women’s running and, in 1967, was the first female runner to start and finish the Boston Marathon with an official bib number. It was a different time back then: organizers were not happy she had officially acquired a bib number and tried to physically remove her from the course.

Five years later, women were welcomed to officially run the Boston Marathon. Switzer’s ran her marathon personal best, according to Wikipedia, at Boston in 1975, placing second in 2:51:37. She was also the first female finisher at the New York City Marathon in 1974.

Switzer is also an Emmy-award winning TV commentator and author. Find out more about her here.
